The Rotaract Club of Birmingham (District 6860) is a service organization in Birmingham, Alabama.〔(official website )〕 It was founded in March 2004 by Birmingham natives Mike Mahon and John Peinhardt. The club is sponsored by 550 members of the Downtown Rotary Club, and has access to the resources of Rotary International (RI) and The Rotary Foundation. With about 230 members, the club is currently the largest community-based Rotaract club.〔(2011 Annual Report )〕 The club holds bi-monthly luncheons at the Harbert Center〔( The Harbert Center )〕 in downtown Birmingham. It meets on the first and third Thursday of every month and hosts guest speakers at its events. Speakers have included William Bell, the mayor of Birmingham, Bob Riley, governor of Alabama, John Johns, president and CEO of Protective Life Corporation, Hatton Smith, president and CEO of Royal Cup Coffee and Kate Nielsen, president of The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. The club holds a number of social and networking events, including monthly happy hours, and promotes a "Service Above Self" Rotarian concept. In 2005, Rotaract chose literacy as a focus and targeted second grade reading comprehension. ==Board of directors== The club has a board of directors with ten members that serve one-year terms.
